MMOEXP: Elden Ring is just the latest FromSoft game
-
Elden Ring has been hacked. It's probably not a surprise, as Souls games typically have a lot of issues with exploits that cause game breakers. But this is no ordinary hack. It's not. Elden Ring is just the latest FromSoft game victimized by a notorious Souls hacker who has a special interest in infiltrating players' worlds them.
If you're familiar with Dark Souls hacker Malcolm Reynolds, then you can probably know what's going on. For those who aren't familiar, Reynolds is a longtime hacker of FromSoft games that caused a myriad of issues with Dark Souls 3 and Dark Souls Remastered players some years ago. In both instances, he claims to have modified the game's code to softban people by giving them invalid products and status-related effects. He claims he's to the same antics that he did in Elden Ring, invading people's worlds and giving them items that they'd be better off with out before taking them down. While it's unclear if he's actually able to impact people's accounts, from videos he's published online it's clear that he's killed players in what seem to be unfair ways.
Reynolds uploaded a video to YouTube on March 9 displaying his latest hack, and all his mischief set to jaunty sounds of "Rama Lama Ding Dong" by The Edsels. The video begins when Reynolds' mouse cursor is able to check an area marked "Hardscoping Tutorial,"" and then another box that reads "This bans these hacks," complete with a little smiley-face emoticon next to the box. It's worth noting but there's no proof that any bans actually occur. The video is a rapid succession of him invading players' worlds and laying absolute waste to them with a massive beam of flame shooting out of his palm and various more destructive spells. It's a total f***, especially since every spell he tried--like the fire beam-- appears to be extensively altered. Reynolds clarified the ways he alters other players' lives during the Lands Between hell, and what he considers to be the justification behind it.
Reynolds talked to MMOexp over Discord messages about the vulnerability he exploited as that is, the "Hardscoping Tutorial" thing, and during the chat, he called it a "pavel." In light on later revelations, it turned out that he was actually trying to fool MMOexp to publish a bogus explanation of how this technique works, which at the time he claimed was a way to inject in faulty items into other players' inventories. These items would be flagged on death, he said at the time, and the game would then identify those who were cheating as the culprits and result in an apparent softban, but there's no evidence to suggest this claim is real. Rumors that such things are likely have been circulating in the gaming community over the years, and while MMOexp can't verify the validity of these claims, we know that cheating continues be a major issue for the series.
It's a headache being invaded by Reynolds. There's nothing you can do when he pops up. His spells are broken and too powerful, so you just...take it. Reactions to Reynolds his activities in Elden Ring aren't surfacing in the moment, but it could just be a matter of time since Reynolds' name frequently appears in Elden Ring's Dark Souls and Elden Ring subreddits.
According to a well-known Reddit post that was posted in April, 2016, the best course of action is to either disconnect or take a suicide decision. It's surprising that Reynolds declares that he does not want to get caught by hackers Elden Ring. He said Bandai Namco and FromSoftware should make use of this experience to design better anti-cheat programs that prevents hackers from exploiting game codes.
